Health Minister unveils revival plan for struggling South district hospital

Rane announces cardiac, neuro and orthopaedic units; says turnaround expected within 4-5 months; MRI facility in July

After the South Goa district hospital hit the headlines for lack of basic medical items such as cotton and gauze, besides Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS), Health Minister Vishwajit Rane on Thursday has promised a turnaround at the South Goa district hospital within 4-5 months, by setting up a full-fledged cardiac, orthopaedic and neurology departments.

In fact, the Health Minister assured that the people of South Goa will be proud of the facilities proposed at the South Goa district hospital once they take shape in the next six months.

Underscoring the need to work hard to take healthcare to the doorsteps of the people, the Health Minister further assured that the government will commission a state-of-the-art MRI facility at the South Goa district hospital in July.

During his visit to the South Goa district hospital to inaugurate the Day Care Chemotherapy centre gifted by the Rotary Club of Panaji Riviera on Thursday, the Health Minister admitted that the district hospital is facing a number of issues. “During my visit, I have taken a review with the district hospital administration. I can tell you that the hospital will be put in order within 3-4 months. During our discussion with the administration, we have been provided details on the staff requirements and infrastructure,” he said.

He added: “To beef up infrastructure, we have already recruited two senior cardiologists, who will be deployed at the South Goa district hospital. The departments of cardiac, orthopaedic and neurology will be set up at the South Goa district hospital in the next 4-5 months. We will depute teams of doctors from the Goa Medical College to run these departments at Margao under the DHS.”

While saying that the MRI facility will be commissioned by July, Rane further said that an interventional radiologist from the GMC will be deputed at Margao.

He said all treatments in respect of cardiac, neurology and orthopaedic will take place right at the South Goa district hospital. “Patients from Canacona who come for treatments for cardiac, orthopaedic and neurology will not be referred to GMC after these departments start functioning in Margao. Angioplasty and angiography will be performed right here at the district hospital,” he added.

Rane further said that the ICU facility at the South Goa district hospital will be further upgraded to cater to the growing requirements.

Saying that governments and Health Ministers may come and go, Rane underscored the need to put a system in place wherein things are decided in an auto mode for the benefit of the people.

Rane reviews shortages, promises swift action

MARGAO: Health Minister Vishwajit Rane has said he has taken a review from nurses and matron on the shortage of cotton, gauze and bed linen at the South Goa district hospital.

“Based on the review, changes will take place at the hospital. When the media reports on deficiencies, we don’t take the news in a negative manner. Because, we have to find a way out to address the issues plaguing the hospital,” he said.

The Goan had on Thursday highlighted the acute shortage of gauze, cotton, besides bed linen at the South Goa district hospital, exposing how an elderly patient was accommodated on a blood stained and stinking bed.

Sources in the know informed that the Health Minister as well a senior bureaucrat has told the South district hospital administration that they may procure medical items such as gauze, cotton, etc at their level pending finalising of the tender.
