MARGAO

Residents of Maina in Curtorim stepped up their opposition to a proposed multi-dwelling housing project in the village on Thursday.

A large number of villagers gathered at the Matanhy Saldanha Administrative Complex in Margao for the hearing of an appeal filed by the Curtorim Village Panchayat against the Salcete BDO’s decision to grant permission for the project.

However, the villagers returned disappointed after learning that the matter had been adjourned before the hearing could take place.

The residents, led by Congress leader Moreno Rebello, said they would attend the next hearing in large numbers and send a clear message that multi-dwelling projects are not welcome in Curtorim.

“The BDO granted permission for the project by invoking the deeming provision. We came here today because the Panchayat has challenged that decision. People were shocked to learn that the hearing had been postponed even before they reached the appellate authority,” Rebello said.

Referring to a meeting held last month with Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco, where villagers demanded action against the then Sarpanch, Rebello noted that the Sarpanch has since resigned.

“We want to send a message to present and future Sarpanchs not to take the people for granted. Residents are fighting to protect the village for future generations. We are already facing water and power supply issues. One can imagine the pressure on these resources if multi-dwelling projects are allowed in the village,” he said.
