City-based lawyer Adv Leona Barreto has demanded the suspension of all Maina-Curtorim police personnel allegedly connected to the assault of five persons, including a minor, pending an inquiry. She has also called for the investigation to be handed over to the Crime Branch or a senior officer unconnected with the Maina-Curtorim Police Station.

Expressing concern over the alleged custodial assault and sexual abuse, Barreto said reports suggest five police personnel were involved and were allegedly under the influence of alcohol while on duty. However, she noted that action was initially taken only against Police Constable Chetan Kholi, said to be the junior-most among those implicated.

Barreto questioned why no immediate action had been initiated against the other personnel named in the case, including two Police Sub-Inspectors, a Head Constable and another constable, despite five days having passed since the incident.

“Suspending only one junior constable while others continue to serve at the same police station creates an impression that the action is merely an eyewash and not a serious attempt to ensure justice,” she said.

Calling for accountability, Barreto urged authorities to take action against all personnel allegedly involved and ensure an impartial probe. “The police are public servants meant to protect citizens, not traumatise them,” she said.

She also appealed to citizens to speak out against any form of verbal or physical abuse by law enforcement personnel.
