Says Railways will execute project as planned; seeks time to study coal pollution concerns

Union Minister of State for Railways, Veeranna Somanna on Thursday said that the double tracking of the ghat section of the South Western Railway will take place only after a Detailed Project Report (DPR) is prepared by the Railways.

He, however, parried a question of coal pollution caused by the wagons carrying coal on the Goa section of the South Western Railway, as he openly admitted that he has no knowledge of the coal pollution in the State.

The Union Minister for State for Railways was at the Margao railway station on Thursday evening to flag off the new Margao-Karwar train on the Konkan Railway route in the presence of PWD Minister Digambar Kamat and senior railway officials.

Fielding questions of on the double tracking project, the Minister said work on the project is being carried out wherever feasible. “As far as the Ghat section is concerned, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) is being prepared,” he said.

He added: “There’s a double engine government in Goa as well as at the Centre. Don’t worry, projects taken up by the Railways will be executed as per the plan.”

Saying he has no idea on coal pollution on the Goa section of SWR, the Minister assured the media that he would like to first study before offering any comments.

The Union Minister said that Indian Railways has seen development by leaps and bounds during the stint of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He said the Indian Railways is committed to provide the best of infrastructure and passenger amenities to the travellers. As far as the safety is concerned, he said the Railways is again committed to upgrade safety standards in the interests of the passengers as well as the Railways.

In his address, PWD Minister Digambar Kamat said that the Margao railway station will soon become one of the best railway junctions on the Konkan railway route. “The Konkan railway has prepared a plan to upgrade the Margao railway station. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has also constituted a sub-committee of officials to synchronise the requirements of the government and local populace with the railway plan. Once completed, the plan will also beautify the Aquem side of the Margao railway station,” Kamat said.
