A decomposed body of an unidentified man, believed to be around 21-22 years old, was found floating in the backwaters behind Neura Village Panchayat on Wednesday.

According to Old Goa fire personnel, the fire station received a call at around 9.50 am reporting a body floating in the backwaters. Fire personnel rushed to the spot and found the body approximately 3-4 km inside the backwaters.

With the help of a canoe arranged by a panch member, the fire personnel retrieved the body after a lengthy operation. The body was in an advanced state of decomposition, with maggots found on it.

The body was subsequently shifted to an ambulance and was taken to Goa Medical College (GMC) for an autopsy.

According to sources, a crab collector who had gone to the backwaters noticed a foul smell and alerted the authorities. Fire and police personnel, along with an ambulance, were rushed to the spot.
