The Goa Human Rights Commission has stepped into allegations of police brutality at Maina-Curtorim Police Station, taking suo motu cognisance of allegations that a group of youth was assaulted while in custody and directing senior police officials to explain the circumstances surrounding the incident.
In notices issued on Thursday, the Commission asked the South Goa Superintendent of Police and the Police Inspector of Maina-Curtorim PS to submit detailed reports by June 17.
The issue pertains to an alleged minor road accident involving a group of youth. Sources had said that the incident led to an argument that was reportedly settled at the scene. Tensions, however, escalated later after allegations surfaced that some were assaulted.
Amid the growing dispute, Maina-Curtorim police allegedly detained five youth and subjected them to physical assault throughout the night while they were at the police station. The allegations triggered protests from family members and residents, following which one personnel was suspended. But the youth alleged that five personnel were involved, demanding action against them.
