Cong attacks Reginaldo as yatra enters Curtorim

As the Congress’ Goy Rakhonn Yatra entered Curtorim, the home turf of MLA Reginaldo Lourenco, on Saturday, Leader of the Opposition Yuri Alemao attacked the Independent MLA for supporting the BJP government on controversial provisions of the Town and Country Planning (TCP) Act, including Sections 39A and 17(2).

Addressing party workers and supporters at Curtorim market, Alemao said local Congress leaders, including Moreno Rebello, had been fighting mega housing projects in the constituency, while the local MLA had remained silent.

“Curtorim is blessed with natural beauty and a pristine environment. We must protect our heritage. Mega housing projects and hill cutting threaten the environment and ecology, while land conversions are taking place. The Congress had never allowed mega housing projects to enter Curtorim,” he said.

Alemao questioned why Lourenco had supported the BJP government on the controversial TCP provisions.

He also criticised the government’s attempt to introduce an anti-conversion Bill in the Goa Legislative Assembly, calling it anti-minority.

“The Cabinet approved the Bill for introduction in the House. Every citizen has the right to protect his or her religion, as guaranteed by the Constitution,” he said.

Alemao further alleged that the Goa Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC), headed by Lourenco, had set a world record by spending Rs 19 crore on its website and another Rs 25 lakh on its logo.

Former Union Minister Eduardo Faleiro, former Chief Minister Francisco Sardinha and others also addressed the meeting.
