MARGAO
Amid speculations in certain quarters that ambitious Congress leaders may stake claim for the coveted post of Leader of Opposition with CLP leader Babu Kavlekar in the dock, the Congress party seems to have rallied behind the Quepem MLA in the wake of government's action and raids against him.
Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) Chief Shantaran Naik on Saturday virtually rejected the demand by the BJP for sacking of Quepem MLA Babu Kavlekar as the Leader of the Opposition.
"Why should Babu step down. There's no demand from the party for Babu's resignation," Shantaram told The Goan on the sidelines of the launching of the Youth Congress membership drive at Margao on Saturday.
Meanwhile, earlier addressing youth Congress workers at Margao on the occasion of the launch of the YC membership in the state, the GPCC Chief told the Youth Congress workers that while there's democracy in the Congress party, the BJP is centered on dictatorship.
He said the youth across the country have found themselves in a peculiar situation with no employment opportunities following the slow down and recession in the wake of demonetization.
In his address, Margao MLA Digambar Kamat underlined the need to channelise youth energy for constructive activity and country building. "The responsibility lies on the YC to train the youth and make them good citizens. A political party with large number of youth is a stable organization," he said.
In his address, AICC secretary Girish Chodankar urged the YC workers to take up the challenge of enrolling youth in the organization during the exercise.
He said the youth across the country are disillusioned with the policies and programs of PM Narendra Modi, saying the unemployment rate has drastically come down after the demonetization.
