MARGAO
The panel appointed by the Congress High Command to explore the possibility of forging alliances with like-minded political parties for the upcoming 2027 Assembly elections held its first meeting late Monday evening and reviewed the prevailing political situation in the State.
The meeting, chaired by Goa Congress desk in-charge and chairman Manikrao Thakare in Margao, comes against the backdrop of the letters written by the Congress leadership to like-minded parties, including the Aam Aadmi Party and the Revolutionary Goans Party, on forging alliances to jointly fight the BJP in the coming polls.
Besides Thakare, the meeting was attended by GPCC chief Girish Chodankar, leader of opposition Yuri Alemao and Congress working president M K Sheikh. The other members of the panel, including Congress Goa desk secretary Anjali Nimbalkar and South Goa MP Viriato Fernandes, could not attend the meeting since they are presently in Delhi.
Sources informed that the meeting only reviewed the prevailing political situation in the State and discussed how to approach the elections. The panel was briefed on the letters written by the party to the leadership of the Aam Aadmi Party and the Revolutionary Goans Party on the alliance talks.
As far as the Goa Forward Party is concerned, sources said the question of writing a letter to the regional party did not arise since the Congress is already in alliance with the party led by MLA Vijai Sardesai. Sources, however, said that since the Goa Forward chief has suspended all talks with the Congress party, leaders of the principal opposition party will now wait for the regional party to withdraw the suspension and resume the alliance talks.
