MARGAO
The Congress on Saturday asserted that the party has sufficient numbers to form the government, even as they made it clear that it is not in favour of dismantling institutions such as the Raj Bhavan just because the Governor belongs to a different school of thought.
AICC observer in-charge of Goa desk, Dr Chella Kumar told the media that the Congress has the numbers to form an alternate government in Goa, but hastened to add that the party is more interested in taking up issues plaguing the people of Goa.
“I can say that the Congress party has the numbers to form the government. We have already moved the Governor with a plea not to dissolve the Assembly and to invite the Congress to form the government,” he said.
Saying that the Congress is not in favour of dismantling institutions such as the office of the Raj Bhavan, Dr Chella Kumar said, “Just because the governor belongs to the RSS school of thought, the Congress will not show disrespect to the office of Governor. For the Congress party, the chair is important and not the person who is sitting on the chair.”
The AICC general secretary said the Congress has already called on the governor on 3-4 occasions asking her to call the Congress party form an alternate government being the single largest party.
“So far, the Congress has not received any reply from the Governor. But, we will be calling upon the governor as per the democratic norms,” he added.
Saying there is no government functioning in the state, the AICC general secretary pointed out that instead of concentrating on delivering governance, the Ministers are jostling to get additional portfolios with vested interests.
