Congress gearing for 'heated' winter session with BJP

Readies for battle on MoI, RP, mining in Assembly

PANAJI

Beginning Monday, the winter session of the Goa Legislative Assembly is set to witness the principle Opposition, Congress Legislative Party (CLP), taking the BJP-led government to task over the issues of Medium of Instruction, Regional Plan and those concerning the mining sector among various others concerning the State.

Speaking to The Goan, Leader of Opposition Pratapsingh Raoji Rane informed that a meeting of the CLP was held on January 7, to deliberate upon the issues to be raised during the short session.

“We will raise the burning issue of MoI with the State government and reiterate the stand of the party that parents of Goa are well-educated and capable enough to decide the medium of instruction for their wards,” Rane said.

He disclosed that Congress will also seek to draw the attention to the failure of the government in handling vital matters like Regional Plan and the delay in appointing a Lokayukta for Goa.

Rane stated, “Congress is of the opinion that the government should denotify RP-2021 and draw up a new plan in consultation with all stakeholders and with people’s participation as per its policy decision.”

It was informed that the Congress is also likely to raise questions over intolerance incidents of the government in general.

CLP spokesperson and Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco stated that the Congress has plans to contest for the post of speaker and deputy speaker with the support of a few independent MLAs.

He informed that he intends to question the government over the imbroglio centered on transportation and auctioning in the mining sector.

Congress has also expressed dissatisfaction over the short duration of the session while pointing out that it will barely allow a day or two for the Opposition to raise various other issues or even a few handful issues in depth.
