Highlighting that Goa Pollution Control Board has issued a show cause notice to the Solid Waste Management Treatment Plant, Congress has alleged that the Saligao plateau has turned into a stinking mountain as the plant is overburdened with the waste coming from various villages from Goa.
“GPCB has issued a show cause notice to SWMTP in December 2018 as the plant has become a total failure,” alleged Congress spokesperson Tulio D’Souza.
The plant was meant to handle waste from Saligao and surrounding areas but the waste from other places like Pernem is coming to
the plant.
The solid waste treatment plant was supposed to cater to 100 tonnes of waste per day but now around 300 tonnes of garbage is coming to the plant per day.
“Around 50 thousand tonnes of unprocessed waste is lying in the plant and 30 thousand tonnes
of waste is lying outside the compound. This has led to the destruction of the pristine hillock of Saligao,” said D’Souza.
Congress has demanded to put in place a serious mechanism at the overburdened Saligao treatment plant and also to have more garbage treatment facilities in each locality just to decongest garbage flow at the Saligao treatment plant.
Youth Cong to protest against
CRZ notification today
PANAJI: Youth Congress will hold a protest at Miramar beach against the Central government’s recent notification on Coastal Regulation Zone 2018 on Thursday.
Countering Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar’s claim that the notification is not applicable to Goa as Goa does not have that much of population density as specified in the notification, Congress spokesperson Tulio D’Souza said that population density is derived from population census and the figures in the census are not static. The notification if not now will be applicable to Goa in some years from now, added D’Souza.
This notification is a death knell of the coastal communities. Fishing community will suffer if the CRZ is changed to 50 metres from the high tide line, D’Souza said.
