State Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday said that Congress should be proud that the Army personnel exercised their voting rights instead of politicising the issue.

Congress President Luizinho Faleiro had alleged that Army personnel were allowed to vote during the polls without their verification that they were registered voters in their hometowns.

Addressing a press conference at BJP headquarters in Panaji, South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar said, “Congress always tries to politicise issues. They should not do it. Army personnel have voting rights. In fact, they should have been proud that they have voted. Their party president has also contested and he must have also tried to meet them. So instead of discussing about why and for whom they voted, we should appreciate that they exercised their voting right.”

Thanking Goans for high voter turnout, Sawaikar said, “We thank Goans for coming out in large numbers and voting. In 2012 elections too we had witnessed a similar trend. In fact, we are of the opinion that people have tried to strengthen the democratic process in Goa.”

“Nonetheless, in this election, women voters have outnumbered male voters by 45168. This is the effect of the performance of the State government," he pointed out.

Speaking about dissolution of the Assembly, he said, “There is no need to discuss the dissolution of the Assembly. Government has sought AG’s advice on the same. If need be an appropriate decision would be taken.”

Meanwhile, BJP’s core committee met on Friday for a post poll assessment.

Speaking about the same, Sawaikar said, “We had begun with the preparations for the elections about eight months back. There is no difference in our claim then and now. 26 of our MLAs will get elected and we will form the government.”
