VASCO

Verna police have registered a case against a contractor and a site supervisor for alleged negligence following the death of a 50-year-old construction worker after a wooden plank fell on his head at a construction site near MES College, Zuarinagar, on October 17.

The accused have been identified as contractor Santosh Hiremath, residing near MES College, Zuarinagar, and supervisor Ajay Kumar Ray, a resident of Candolim.

According to the complaint lodged by PSI Aditya Velip of Verna police station, the accused allegedly failed to provide safety equipment, including helmets and safety harnesses, to labourers working at the under-construction building.

The complaint further alleges that a wooden plank fitted between the framework of the construction lift and the concrete portion of the building had not been properly secured.

The plank reportedly slipped due to vibrations during the operation of the lift and fell on the head of Huchhappa Sonakappa, a native of Karnataka residing at Dabolim, who was working on the ground near the lift.

He was immediately shifted to the Sub-District Hospital (SDH), Chicalim, where the duty doctor declared him brought dead. Police visited the hospital and conducted an enquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death.

Verna police have registered a case against the contractor and supervisor under Section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), pertaining to causing death by negligence.

Further investigation is being conducted by PSI Aditya Velip under the supervision of PI Anand Shirodkar and the guidance of Mormugao SDPO SP Gurudas Kadam.
