The Cortalim Comunidade will go to polls on December 6, for the triennium 2016-18, with at least two panels in the fray.
According to supporters of rival panels, comunidade shares have been transferred to form a majority in order to gain control of these age-old institutions which own vast land.
Like neighbouring Sancoale Comunidade, this comunidade also has encroachments on its land, though on a much smaller scale, some of which are being fought out in the courts. Interestingly, some of the encroachers are also shareholders of the comunidade.
Meanwhile, the outgoing members of Cortalim Comunidade managing committee said that during their tenure, they had managed to strengthen the financial base of the comunidade, apart from protecting the land.
“When we were elected as members, the comunidade dividend was just Rs 120 which now has been enhanced to Rs 500 and in the coming financial year, the dividend will be raised to Rs 1000,” the Attorney John Philip Pereira told The Goan.
“This was possible because we managed to plug the leaks. For instance, we collected Rs 5 lakh from rent on hoardings and another Rs 5 lakh will be collected soon. These include arrears from the parties, of the period even before our tenure, who did not have receipts. We also collected arrears from metal crushers amounting to Rs 11 lakh,” Pereira added.
