Bringing back the issue of opinion poll, Cortalim gram sabha on Sunday resolved to erect a statue of Jack De Sequeira in Cortalim.
The proposal was placed before the panchayat by Ward Panch Anita Kenkre.
The panchayat also decided to go ahead with the resolution to various authorities to demand that the new flyover bridge be named as Jack de Sequeira Bridge.
Speaking to the media, Dy Sarpanch Raymond Desa said that the statue of Sequeira was important in the history of Cortalim Constituency as Dr Sequeira was indeed responsible for safeguarding the identity of Goa.
"Dr Jack de Sequeira was instrumental in the Opinion Poll and Cortalim was the place where the lead for the United Goan Party had begun. We will also place a demand that the new bridge be named after him," said Desa.
Ward Panch Anita Kenkre said that the Opinion Poll was the reason why Goa was still a state, else it would be a part of Maharashtra.
According to Kenkre, the MGP had taken a lead on Opinion Poll till St Andre constituency and it was only after Cortalim that the United Goans Party took the lead and subsequently won the Opinion Poll and hence Cortalim constituency played an important role in the Opinion Poll.
"Cortalim was the first constituency where United Goans took the lead and this is important in the history of Goa. We want all our future generations to remember this historic movement for a lifetime. I have put up a proposal for erecting a statue of Jack De Sequeira in the village so that the winning trend be remembered. Had we not won the Opinion Polls, Goa would be a part of Maharashtra and there would be only two MLAs or may some ZP member in a remote corner of Maharashtra," said Kenkre.
Cortalim Congress block president Devendra Kenkre said that the statue be placed at an ideal place where it would be clearly visible.
"Dr Jack de Sequeira needs to be given due credit. A statue must be erected in his rememberence so that people know about the important factions of our history after seeing the statue," said Kenkre.
