PANAJI
Speaking to The Goan, sources who were present at the meeting informed that the Panaji ruling councillors were shepherded by Babush Monserrate who had joined the party prior to the Panaji by-poll.
Their imminent joining has also raised questions about their opposition to the CCP handing over the land at Bainguinim to the government for setting up a solid waste management plant at the site. The ‘Babush' panel rules the Panaji municipality by virtue of 15 elected councillors owing allegiance to the Taleigao politician. However, many of the current councillors are members of the Congress party with two of them Yatin Parekh and Surendra Furtado being past Congress candidates.
The councillors, have however, demanded that they be taken into confidence before the CCP hands over any land to the government.
"If the CCP can lease the land to the government where is the need of an outright transfer. Further, the government needs to explain why it needs the entire 1.77 lakh square metres of land at Bainguinim," a councillor said.
