PANAJI
Plans of the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) to expeditiously demolish the old market building it had sealed and commence work on the third phase of the market complex are expected to get delayed due to the court battle with the displaced traders and its inability to provide them with alternative space.
CCP officials said, they are still scouting for space to provide these eight meat traders with alternative stalls.
The CCP, it may be recalled, had evacuated these eight traders on grounds that the old market building was dilapidated and 'unsafe'.
In the petition filed before the Bombay High Court at Goa, the meat traders have questioned the CCP's finding that the building they were occupying is unsafe and poses a danger to them or the public.
At the last hearing more than a week ago, the Bombay High Court had directed the CCP to look for and provide these petitioners with some alternate arrangement.
The capital city has been without a meat (mutton and beef) market for more than a week since CCP sealed the shops of the meat traders on the ground floor of the old building adjacent to the fish market.
Beef and mutton consumers in the capital city have to now rely for their supplies on the handful of standalone cold storage shops and malls in the city.
