In a tragic incident, a 40-year-old staffer of the River Navigation Department (RND) who was deployed on a ferry between Marcaim and Cortalim drowned while attempting to attend to a fault in the ferry early Monday morning.
The body of Sitaram Mulvi of Bandora-Ponda was located below the ferry boat in the evening after search operations by the fire services.
According to information, three persons on board the "Curtorim" ferry boat stationed at the Cortalim ferry wharf entered the water to remove a rope which apparently got entangled in the propeller fan of the ferry boat.
An RND staffer Vasudev Naik said while two others returned to the wharf, Mulvi went missing and the police and fire services were alerted.
Speaking to media, Verna Fire Officer Damodar Zambaulikar said they had received a call at around 6.20 am about the incident.
"We went to the site but the required equipment to carry out the search was not available with us and we then contacted the Curchorem fire station.”
“Both teams from the Curchorem and Verna fire stations carried out search operations to locate the missing staffer and there were also plans to ask Navy and Coast Guard for assistance. Finally in the evening, we managed to retrieve the body from under the ferry boat," said Zambaulikar.
