From his childhood days, Rooney Menezes of Curtorim was fascinated by planes and dreamt of becoming a pilot. After passing Class XII, he told his parents he wanted to pursue a career as a commercial pilot.
After years of hard work and perseverance, Rooney has realised his dream after obtaining his commercial pilot licence in New Zealand.
On returning home, Rooney received an emotional welcome from his parents and family, who were overjoyed at his achievement.
“My parents supported me when I first told them about my plan. After undergoing training in Delhi, I was sent to New Zealand for further training. I have completed the training and am now a commercial pilot,” he said.
Rooney said the journey was not easy, with cancelled flights, an extended training period, rising fuel costs and difficult weather conditions posing challenges. However, he remained determined and continued working towards his goal.
He said his love for travelling made becoming a pilot even more fulfilling. “I feel happy that I will be getting paid for doing what I love most. It is also a matter of pride for my parents,” he said.
His training included examinations in navigation, aviation law and meteorology, besides radio communication.
His father, former Curtorim sarpanch Rui Menezes, thanked the Almighty and Mother Mary for his son’s success. He said the family supported Rooney’s decision despite concerns over the course fees.
Rui said they also approached Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco for assistance, while extended family and friends especially his elder sister provided support throughout Rooney’s journey.
He said the entire family was proud to have helped Rooney turn his childhood dream into reality.
