Sanitation at the Cutbona fishing jetty figured at the gram sabha of the Velim village panchayat with the Fisheries Department approaching the panchayat body for the issuance of NOC to build a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) for the toilets planned at the fisheries complex.
The gram sabha meeting chaired by Sarpanch Savio D’Silva, however, decided to ask the fisheries department to first seek the necessary permissions from the Town and Country Planning (TCP) department before seeking the panchayat NOC for the STP project.
The Sarpanch pointed out that members were of the opinion that since the Fisheries Department is not exempted from obtaining the mandatory permissions from the concerned authorities, gram sabha members has decided to ask the Fisheries to first obtain the permission from the TCP for the STP project.
“The gram sabha has told the Panchayat body to first ask the Fisheries to get the TCP permissions before issuing any NOC to the STP project,” the Sarpanch said adding that the Panchayat would soon write to the Fisheries Department about the gram sabha resolution.
Some of the gram sabha members further demanded to know whether the proposed STP plant is being planned in the land acquired by the Fisheries Department or the Captain of Ports or on the land belonging to the local Communidade body.
Members were also critical about the failure of the Fisheries Department to install mobile toilets to cater to the sanitation requirements of the migrants working on the fishing vessels operating from the Cutbona fishing jetty.
They were also critical of the absence of any provision for toilets in and around the fishing jetty and criticised the claims made by the state authorities in implementing the swaach Bharat mission in the state.
The meeting also deliberated on a proposal mooted by the panchayat body to employ a former employee as an office boy. The proposal, however, evoked objection from a gram sabha members, and it was finally decided to place the matter on the next gram sabha meeting.
The gram sabha also deliberated on the audit report which was placed before the meeting for discussions.
