The Central Water Commission (CWC) on Friday inspected the Anjunem Dam in a bid to enhance its safety and operational performance under Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Project (DRIP) scheme. An amount of Rs 58 crore has been earmarked for the project.
Launched in 2012, the DRIP is an initiative of the CWC and is funded by the World Bank on an 80:20 ratio. Goa is being covered in Phase II of the project. Speaking to ‘The Goan’, WRD Minister Subhash Shirodkar said that the primary beneficiaries of the project are the communities that depend on dam water for irrigation purposes. “It is a central government scheme. The team inspected the dam and its flow and will now recommend measures for further strengthening of its operation,” he said.
The Minister said the project is already implemented across various States and Goa is being covered in phase II.
The scheme involves various components like dam safety institutional strengthening, incidental revenue generation for sustainable operation and maintenance of dams among others. The Phase II project will cover 18 States – Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttarakhand, UP, and West Bengal.
