Cracking down on drunken driving as part of a special drive, Goa Police on Tuesday registered 31 cases across the State.
While the Traffic Police registered 28 cases, the police registered three cases. Of the 31 cases, 17 were registered in North Goa while 14 were registered in South Goa.
Cases were registered by the Traffic Police at Panaji (8), Mapusa (4), Calangute (1), Anjuna (1), Ponda (5), Margao (3), Vasco (1), Colva (2), Canacona (2) and Quepem (1). Apart from these, 3 cases of drunken driving were registered by the Goa Police in North Goa.
The cases were booked under Section 185 of Motor Vehicles Act 1988, which attracts imprisonment of six months or a fine of Rs 10,000 or both, for the first offence.
For a second or subsequent offence, there is imprisonment which may extend upto two years or a fine of Rs 15,000 or both.
Further, to send a strong message of its resolve to put an end to the drunken driving menace the cases have been referred to the court of the judicial magistrate.
In addition, a report has also been sent to the Transport Department for suspension of driving licence of the violators.
Meanwhile, Goa Police has released a video adaptation of a poem in a bid to create awareness among the public on drunken driving and the importance of obeying traffic rules.
The poem titled ‘Sonvoi dhi re soddun paddi, naka pivun cholounk ghadi’ is penned by poet Ramesh Sajhu Ghadi and rendered in the voice of artist Rajesh Pednekar who was felicitated by DGP Jaspal Singh for his efforts towards containing the menace of drunken driving.
