Deadly Sunday: Police discover 5 dead bodies

Five bodies of dead persons were discovered by the police on Sunday with one found under the Amona bridge yet to be identified.

Of the five, two were discovered in the Old Goa police's jurisdiction including one along the roadside where the man was lying dead in the midst of his luggage.

The body of the fourth victim was fished out of the Mandovi river near the Panaji ferry wharf and the fifth was that of a man in Ponda who apparently collapsed and died while on a morning walk.

In the morning on Sunday, the body of a 26-year-old Odisha native, Mirza Baju Sorene was discovered near a Biryani outlet in the precincts of a Dargah in Old Goa. He was reportedly working as a helper at the outlet but police said he died of natural causes related to chronic alcoholism. 

Police said, he had been sick and suffering from severe abdominal pains because of which he had taken off from work for two days. He was declared dead on admission by doctors at the GMC.

About an hour later, Old Goa police discovered yet another lifeless body in a roadside drain near the police station itself. He was identified as Tanaji Gaikwad (62), a Kholapur native. Police said he too was a chronic alcoholic and must have fallen into the drain and drowned. An autopsy examination of both the bodies has been conducted, police added.

Later in the afternoon, the body of Ajit Naik (24) again an Odisha native was found on the Mandovi river bed near the Panaji ferry wharf. Panaji police have sent the body to the GMC for an autopsy examination. 

Around the same time in the afternoon, yet another body of man was discovered in the river under the Amona bridge. Bicholim police, with the help of personnel from the fire services retrieved the body and have sent it to the GMC for. Police said they suspect suicide and are making efforts to identify him.

In the Ponda case, a man suddenly collapsed on the pavement while on his morning walk. Police revealed that he used work in a Kundaim-based pharmaceutical company
