Stating that some politicians who were routed in elections were trying to obstruct development work by filing cases in the vigilance department, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo on Wednesday appealed to them not to block infra works which are for the betterment of the village.

“People are watching you all. Politicians who have lost elections should not obstruct development work carried out by the panchayat. It’s for the improvement of the village and people will not remain silent spectators,” Lobo said.

The Calangute MLA was speaking after inaugurating a 200 KVA power transformer at Madda-vaddo, Calangute in the presence of Sarpanch Shawn Martins, Zilla Parishad member Dattaprasad Dabhholkar and other panchayat members.

Speaking further, Lobo said funds collected by the panchayat by way of taxes should be spent for the betterment of people of the village.

“Keeping the money in fixed deposits in banks is of no use. We must develop infrastructure for the people. It’s their money and we have to return it by providing good services to them,” he said.

He said since the panchayat was collecting taxes from people, it was the responsibility of the panchayat to set up required infrastructure for the village.

He further disclosed that Calangute panchayat managed to clear and get back 22 files that were stuck at the BDO due to frivolous complaints raised by defeated politicians.

Stating that water and electricity was the basic need of the common man, Lobo said the panchayat was ready to put up more such transformers provided people were ready to provide land.

“Somebody has to offer land so that we can take it up and set up the best infra along the coastal belt,” he said.

The estimated cost of the 200 KVA transformer is Rs 22 lakh which was funded by a local hotelier, Jacinto D’Souza. The transformer has been set up in land provided by the hotelier.
