The Congress on Tuesday blamed the recent defection by its eight MLAs for the loss of Congress in the ZP by-poll.
Cortalim Congress leader Olencio Simoes added that the party would be revived and be back to the number one position ahead of the next assembly elections
"We will continue our work to highlight issues faced by our villages and indulge in constructive criticism. We will support the newly-elected ZP for overall development for the betterment of the constituency,” said Simoes.
“This is the third election in the Cortalim constituency and many people did not come out to vote, and this may be one of the reasons why our votes went down.”
"Another reason for the decline in our votes could be the defection by the eight MLAs who betrayed the people. When we went door-to-door campaigning, many people questioned us on how they can trust us again after the eight MLAs defected from the party recently. We tried to explain to the people that the bigger picture is to unite and fight against the BJP.”
Congress candidate Valent Barbosa said that he will continue to work for the people and blamed the lack of time for the loss in the elections. "I am a first-timer and I contested against the wife of the sitting MLA. I cannot comment on why we lost and it is a decision of the people," said Barbosa.
