Demolition of two unsafe Margao buildings within 10 days: Collector

MARGAO
South district Collector and Chairperson of South Goa District Disaster Management Authority, Egna Cleetus, IAS has on Thursday asserted that the orders passed to demolish the two buildings in the commercial capital will be executed in the next 10 days.

The district Collector had last month issued orders for the demolition of two buildings, Indra Apartments and the Cabeca building housing a footwear showroom on the Isidore Baptista Road.

The Collector told the media on Thursday that the PWD is in the process of issuing the work order for the demolition of the two buildings. “After the demolition was issued by my office, the PWD has set in motion the process to execute the order. My office has been informed that the PWD will soon issue the work order to execute the demolition order within the next 10 days,” she added.

Incidentally, it will be two years in November 2025 since the outgoing district Collector, Asvin Chandru had issued the demolition order to the Margao Municipality to demolish the Cabeca building in November 2023 after the structure was declared unsafe by the Goa College of Engineering in 2018.

Incidentally, the Margao Municipality dragged its feet to execute the Collector’s order for well over a year and half, even taking its own time to withdraw the trade licence issued to the footwear showroom. That’s not all, Even though the MMC had withdrawn the trade licence to the footwear showroom a year ago, business continued as usual in the establishment even today, indicating that the MMC turned a blind eye to the business activity in the unsafe building despite the withdrawal of  the trade licence.
