The Department for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), created by bifurcation of the Directorate of Social Welfare, to deal with all the matter related to persons with disabilities is set to commence operations in Goa starting April 1, 2024.
DEPwD’s primary objective is to ensure the effective implementation of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act (RPwD Act). As part of this transition, ongoing schemes aimed at aiding persons with disabilities will be seamlessly transferred to DEPwD, with the exception of the Dayanand Social Security Scheme (PwD) and Special Schools.
The new department situated at Building ‘B’ New Market Complex, 3rd Floor, Porvorim, has taken major steps to enhance accessibility. This includes the establishment of a facilitation counter on the ground level and the provision of amenities such as wheelchair-accessible ramps, lifts, toilets, and wheelchairs.
