De-weeding of the Tolleaband lake at Benaulim commenced on Thursday as part of the beautification of four lakes in the Benaulim constituency.
Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas, who made his presence felt at the lake along with former Benaulim sarpanch John Barretto and residents, said the lake will be beautified with the funds under the Central government scheme.
That work on the de-weeding of the Tolleaband lake started on a war footing and assumes significance given that the Benaulim MLA has planned to make the lake accessible for the immersion of Ganesh idols this year.
Due to the weeds and flow of sewage, immersion of Ganesh idols at the Tolleaband lake has been stopped over the last couple of years, with the devotees now taking the idols for immersion at the Dambab tank in Fatorda.
“We are trying our best to ensure that the lake is not only de-weeded but ensure that the quality of the water is conducive for people to step down for the immersion. We will hold a meeting with our Hindu brothers to discuss Ganesh immersion at the Tolleaband lake so that we can all participate in the Ganesh festivities,” Venzy said.
