PANAJI: The Directorate of Health Services (DHS) has issued a health advisory following an increase in influenza activity in Goa in recent weeks, in line with the seasonal pattern of respiratory infections during the monsoon.
According to surveillance data, influenza-positive cases have risen from 6 in June to 44 in July and 73 as of August 20, 2026. The DHS said the increase is being closely monitored as part of routine influenza surveillance.
The health department has urged the public to take necessary precautions to prevent the spread of respiratory infections. People have been advised to cover their nose and mouth with a tissue or handkerchief while coughing or sneezing and to wear a mask when experiencing respiratory symptoms. Those who are unwell should avoid close contact with others and crowded places.
The DHS has also advised people to wash their hands frequently with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser. They should avoid touching their eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands. People experiencing fever, cough, sore throat or other respiratory symptoms have been advised to limit contact with others. Medical attention should be sought if symptoms are severe, persistent or worsening, particularly in young children, elderly persons, pregnant women and individuals with underlying medical conditions.
The department has also urged the public to follow medical advice regarding testing and treatment and avoid self-medication.
The DHS said the rise in influenza activity is being monitored closely and appealed to the public not to panic, while remaining vigilant and following recommended infection prevention measures to reduce the spread of respiratory infections.
