Two shacks were extensively damaged in a fire at Gaurawada-Calangute after fireworks were lit during celebrations to usher in the New Year.

The affected shack owners suspect the fire started when sparks from the fireworks fell on the shacks.

The fire damaged chairs, tables, beds, other wooden items, electrical items, CCTV cameras, bamboo, plastic, and the thatched roof at the two shacks owned by Melvin Sequeira and Katrina Fernandes.

A major tragedy was averted as the fire was extinguished in time.

A fire brigade from the Pilerne Fire Station went to the site, but by then, workers at the shack, as well as people in the area, had extinguished the fire.
