Directorate General of Shipping raises alarm on fraudulent schemes targeting seafarers and their families

Panjim: An advisory has been issued by the Directorate General of Shipping urging seafarers and their families to be cautious of fraudulent schemes. The advisory warns against individuals falsely claiming to be associated with seafarers or law enforcement authorities and soliciting money under false pretenses.

Instances have been reported where family members of seafarers receive calls, messages, or emails alleging their loved ones are involved in illegal activities such as smuggling or murder, and demanding money for their release. These claims are often false attempts to exploit unsuspecting family members.

The advisory advises families to verify the identity of callers and not to transfer money without proper verification. If such calls are received, families are urged to inform the relevant recruitment agency or ship-owners immediately. These agencies are instructed to alert law enforcement authorities to prevent further victimization and ensure the safety of seafarers and their families.

The Directorate General of Shipping emphasizes the importance of collective efforts to protect seafarers and their families from falling prey to deceitful schemes.
