MARGAO
Will the Margao Municipal Council Chairperson Babita Angle Prabhudesai and Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes explain how come labourers supplied by Ponda-based Bapu Environmental Social Service Organisation deserve a wage of Rs 500 compared to the existing workforce engaged in door-to-door waste collection in the commercial, who are paid a paltry wage of Rs 323 per day.
The glaring disparity in the payment of wages for the 45 workers supplied by the Ponda-based agency and the existing workforce has triggered resentment in the corridors of the civic body, with the existing door-to-door workers demanding to know in what way the workers provided by the agency are superior to them in terms of work.
Questions are being raised in the corridors of the civic body over the discrimination between the workers provided by the agency and the existing workers when the government circular is categorical in stating that all daily wage workers engaged in door-to-door waste collection are entitled for a wage rate of Rs 500 per day.
Given the situation, Tuesday saw the existing daily wage workers engaged in door-to-door waste calling on the MMC chairperson with a plea to bring their wage rate on par with the labourers supplied by the Ponda-based agency.
Expressing sympathy with the existing daily wage workers, the chairperson told the chief officer to ensure that the workers employed on door-to-door waste collection are immediately brought on par with the labourers supplied by the Ponda-based agency.
