Former Calangute MLA Agnelo Fernandes on Wednesday alleged that dispute over sharing proceeds of flesh trade was behind Candolim hotel owner’s murder.

An owner of Candolim based hotel Vishwajit Singh was murdered in the wee hours of Tuesday and two men have been arrested in Karnataka’s Gadag district.

Though police says that the two men murdered the hotel owner over an issue of commission on a rent a bike business, Fernandes who is Congress spokesperson alleged at a press conference held at the party headquarters that the police version is just an eye wash.

“No one murders a businessman over a small issue like rent a bike commissions,” Fernandes said and lamented that the police are not taking action against the drugs and prostitution mafia active in this area even after repetitive complaints filed by locals.

Without specifically naming him, Fernandes alleged that “local MLA” is supporting these illegal businesses.

“The two persons arrested in the murder are from the same community, which the local MLA has been demanding OBC status,” he alleged, adding that they are from Bijapur, which the ‘local MLA’ is frequenting recently.

He also alleged that the arrested duo had a few days prior to the murder threatened locals openly by brandishing swords.

Prostitution and other businesses are going on for the last 5-6 years and locals have raised their voice over these activities in the gram sabhas. However, the police is not taking any action. Now even the Nigerian prostitutes are active in the Candolim area, he alleged.

“Goa is proceeding the Bihar way,” Fernandes said, criticising the state of law-and-order in Goa.
