WHAT IS DOPPLER RADAR

* A Doppler radar is a specialized radar that uses the Doppler effect to produce velocity data about objects at a distance

* It does by this bouncing a microwave signal off a desired target and analyzing how the object's motion has altered the frequency of the returned signal

POST MONSOON

REGISTERS

158.3 MM RAIN

* Goa experienced thunder and lightning on Tuesday evening after temperatures increased due to a shift in the westerly winds

* IMD at Goa registered 158.3 mm of rains post monsoon, which is 10.3 mm departure from the normal reading

* IMD has forecast partly to mainly clear cloudy sky with min and max temperatures of 23 and 34 degree celsius respectively

Personnel from the State IMD are undergoing training in handling the device which is already in possession of the department. The Doppler weather radar will help the department in forecasting weather conditions every two hours instead of the 24-hour interval that is currently being followed.

Speaking to 'The Goan', Director in-charge ML Sahu said the radar is currently in the testing phase as several members of the department are undergoing specific training on how to use the device. Additionally, it will allow the department to give highway forecasts and improved weather predictions.

“With the forcasting ability of the radar, highway forecasts can be made in an interval between two to three hours. Any information on sudden changes in weather systems can also be detected. Even small weather system changes can be detected with the Doppler weather radar,” he said.

Sahu also added that the radar will cover an approximate area of 300 to 500 kilometer around the Althino based station, thereby covering the entire stretch of Goa.

The Doppler weather radar is used to locate precipitation, calculate its motion and estimate the type of precipitation and work by sending directional pulses of microwave radiation.

A group of personnel with the department are undergoing training on how to operate and present results from the radar system. Though the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) has a similar radar system of their own, this will be the first time the central government will be installing it in the state.
