Hospicio Medical Superintendent Dr Ira Almeida said the hospital had stopped functioning from the annex building ever since it was declared unsafe for occupation around nine months ago last year, while stating that the Health authorities had issued a notice to the dialysis unit owner to vacate the premise, but the owner continued the activity in the same building.

Incidentally, the dialysis centre run at the Hospicio annex building was in the news over a month ago over the non-payment of bills by the health services of the unit running into lakhs of rupees, a reason which was attributed behind the alleged assault on the Health Director Dr Sanjay Dalvi.

“After Hospicio had received a report from the PWD stating that the hospital annex building was unsafe for occupation, we had shifted the casualty and the medicine ward from the building to other sections of the hospital,” Dr Ira said, adding that the Hospicio was only using one room on the second floor of the building to store old records. The room housing the old records was not affected by the fire as it was restricted to only one room which housed the dialysis items.

To a query from the media, the Hospicio Medical Superintendent stated that the dialysis owner was told to vacate the premises after the PWD declared the building unsafe. “Even the district Collector, who had inspected the annex building had called upon the all concerned to vacate the building premises,” she said.

The Hospicio annex building was in the news last year after a portion of the building parapet came crashing down injuring a person. It was after this incident that the PWD was told to conduct a structural stability of the building, which later gave a report declaring the building unsafe.
