Noted medical practitioner and social worker Dr Chandrakant Shetye on Thursday announced his decision to contest as an independent candidate from Bicholim constituency.
Addressing a news conference in Bicholim, Dr Shetye said he has been in the medical profession for the last 20 years, while he and his brother have been in politics and social work since 2015.
"Unemployment is a major issue today and we will not just run for government jobs. Bringing a big pharma company will provide employment to hundreds of skilled and unskilled workers,” said Dr Shetye.
Dr Shetye claimed that many projects have not been completed in the last 15 years.
He said he would focus on boosting tourism by developing several rural tourism projects and bringing a Para Medical College to provide 100 per cent employment in Bicholim.
“We will be announcing a number of schemes in the near future. If given a chance, I am committed to provide honest service in the constituency. I will work for the people for 16 hours a day. I will provide many facilities in the health sector,” he said.
A number of supporters of Dr Shetye, including Dr Dinesh Amonkar and Dr Praveen Sawant, were present on the occasion.
