Road digging work in Valpoi for laying underground power and water pipelines has badly affected the city’s drainage system. Many drains are now filled with mud and debris from the excavation, raising fears of flooding and waterlogging during the monsoon.
Residents have appealed to the municipal council to clear the drains immediately and restore the flow of water. They say that if this is not done before the rains, several areas could face waterlogging, flooding and related health problems.
The municipal authorities have started repairing some of the damaged roads, which has brought limited relief. However, people are worried about the quality of the repairs and whether the roads will again be dug up, causing further trouble.
A proper drainage system is essential to prevent flooding in the city. The present condition shows a lack of regular maintenance of the drains.
The excavation work has been going on for nearly two months, leading to traffic jams and daily inconvenience. Many roads are in poor shape and the drainage network has almost collapsed in some places.
Citizens have urged the authorities to give top priority to cleaning the drains and fixing the damage before the monsoon sets in, to avoid serious problems in the coming weeks.
