CANACONA
A trailer container fell on its side in Loliem-Polem village area on Sunday, blocking and disrupting the smooth flow of traffic on National Highway “ 66 since afternoon.
The trailer container bearing registration no. TS12 UC0251 reportedly carrying over 20 tonnes load, coming from Karnataka was proceeding to Margao, when while negotiating a slight turn at the Dapot slope fell on its side, and literarily down around 25 metres, came to halt with its one side hitting the hillock and entirely blocking the tarred section of the highway. Luckily, the container missed falling on a moving car by inches, informed a resident.
Smooth flow of traffic was disrupted till late evening, even as heavy traffic proceeding for a jatra at Majali got stranded for several hours. While locals assembled in large numbers, some jawans travelling on the route stopped and assisted the locals in pulling out the injured driver from the trailer-container's cabin.
The driver was later referred to Canacona Community Health Centre for treatment. The driver was heard informing locals that the brakes failed while negotiating the slight turn.
With the container blocking entire road, locals later engaged a JCB to pull some earth/mud to enable the traffic to cross the road. The container was later in the evening pulled up and kept on one side of the road to finally restore the smooth flow of highway traffic.
A local said that while the road is better in that area, the driver was heavily drunk and drunk driving was the cause for the accident.
