Truck with liquor had caught fire in Pernem in June

A driver was arrested in Gujarat in connection with the illegal transportation of liquor worth Rs 60 lakh found in a truck which had caught fire in Pernem. According to Pernem police, a truck had caught fire at Mahakhajan in Dhargal-Pernem early in the morning of June 17.
The fire was extinguished by the Pernem Fire & Emergency Services and during the operation, firefighters broke open the seal of the container and found 1,286 boxes of liquor of different brands.
It was also observed that an unknown accused, who is the owner/driver of the container truck, had erased/tampered with the chassis number of the container truck and used a fake number plate as genuine while illegally transporting the liquor, thereby cheating the authorities.
The owner/driver had abandoned the container truck and fled from the spot.
The liquor worth about Rs 60 lakh, which was seized from the container truck, was later handed over to the excise department in Pernem for further action. The owner/driver of the container truck had been absconding to evade arrest in the crime. Teams were formed to locate and nab the owner/driver.
Acting on technical surveillance and credential inputs and after hectic efforts, the container truck driver, who was absconding, was traced in Gujarat on Monday.
He has been arrested under Sections 318(2), 336(2), 336(3) and 340(2) r/w 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and is presently in police custody. Pernem PSI Tukaram Chodankar is conducting investigations under the supervision of Pernem PI Sachin Lokre.
