Report submitted to Canacona dy collector; structural stability test underway and is expected soon
CANACONA
A drone video survey was conducted on the storage tank containing large quantities of molasses which has tilted and lies precariously at a factory in the Canacona Industrial Estate in Shristhal.
As part of a survey to gauge the safety of the tank, a structural stability test is also underway and will be completed soon.
Sources told The Goan that the drone video survey was conducted on Friday and a report was submitted to the Canacona deputy collector.
The structural stability report will also be submitted to the dy collector, who is the SDO of Canacona taluka and Officer Incharge of Taluka Disaster Management Authority.
Meanwhile, the odour of the molasses has also begun to engulf the Canacona Industrial Estate area, especially those establishments in the area.
It is also feared that even the slight leakage of the unused molasses, stored in the tank for two decades ever since an alcohol factory had shut down, could lead to a major environmental hazard.
Locals fear that if the tank, which has deformed and tilted, were to burst, the molasses would flow across other industrial plots on one side and enter rivulet on the western side, which would then seep into the water bodies, including the Talpona river.
Earlier on Thursday, a joint inspection had been conducted by the Canacona dy collector, Mamlatdar and officials of IDC, GSPCB and management of the firm NTS Pvt. Ltd, which has recently taken over the industrial plot.
The firm was directed to immediately conduct a drone video survey and a structural stability test in 24 hours to ascertain the status of the tank which has tilted dangerously on one side.
