In an incident that occurred at Canara Bank’s branch in Panaji, a tourist had come to the branch with notes to be exchanged along with only a photocopy of his ID. The manager however, insisted on showing the original as well, clearly showing the high standards being followed to ensure that money is coming from genuine people.
Customers can exchange a maximum of Rs 4,000 of old notes with new notes per day by filling a form, showing original ID proof and giving photocopy of the same. People can also withdraw at maximum Rs 10,000 per day from their bank account.
From the end of those at bank counters, dispensing the money, the process is nothing short of cumbersome. Based on directions from the Reserved Bank of India (RBI) a detailed list of names of those that have exchanged money along with details of their identification.
“We’ve been given a format to be followed when submitting the day’s transactions and amounts accepted,” said one source on the condition of anonymity.
Based on the amounts exchanged and deposited, users names and details from their identification cards are listed and submitted for each day.
