Excise Dept cracks down on liquor stores violating rules in Calangute

MAPUSA

The Excise Department in Bardez has taken strict action against four wine shops in Calangute for breaking the State’s liquor sale rules.

The shops were found selling alcohol past the legal closing time of 10 pm, leading the department to carry out a raid late on Monday night.

Officials from the Excise Department confirmed that these shops were selling liquor well beyond the allowed hours, which is a clear violation of the law.

During the raid, the department booked the establishments under the relevant sections of the Goa Excise Act.

An official explained that the raid is part of ongoing efforts to ensure compliance with excise laws, especially in tourist hotspots like Calangute.

The department had received complaints about shops operating outside the permitted hours, prompting the raid as part of routine checks.

A local resident, who chose to stay anonymous, welcomed the department’s action. “It’s good to see the authorities taking this seriously. Calangute is always busy with tourists, and such violations can cause trouble at night. We need stricter enforcement,” he said.
