Fake CRPF officer cheats man of Rs 3.95L in online scam

MAPUSA

Colvale police have registered a cyber fraud case after a 63-year-old man from Bardez was allegedly cheated of Rs 3.95 lakh by a person pretending to be a CRPF officer.

Police said the complaint was filed by Adrian D’Souza, a resident of St Ann Colony in Tivim. On January 29, the accused contacted D’Souza and showed interest in renting his flat in Murida, Margao. Claiming to be a CRPF officer, the man won the victim’s trust. He then told D’Souza that he would transfer the monthly rent and security deposit and asked him to operate his mobile banking app.

The victim was reportedly tricked into transferring Rs 3.95 lakh through several online transactions. After receiving the money, the accused stopped responding, and D’Souza realised he had been cheated. Police have started an investigation to trace the unidentified accused.

They have also warned people not to share banking access or use mobile payment apps on the instructions of unknown callers.
