Residents of a house in remote Saleli village of Sattari taluka had a miraculous escape when a wall and a portion of their house collapsed at an unearthly hour of 3 am on Sunday.
Fortunately, there was no bodily harm to anyone as they were alerted by loud noises and evacuated immediately, after which a wall and a portion of the roof collapsed.
A member of the household, Satyawati, said the room where the wall collapsed was where ‘Babu’ used to sleep. She attributed the collapse of a portion of their house to the heavy rainfall which has pounded their village over the last two weeks.
Although there was no harm done to anyone, the household is now in financial distress due to the cost of repairing their home. They have appealed to the local authorities to provide them with immediate assistance to rebuild the damaged portion of their house.
The incident has also instilled a sense of fear among neighbours in the locality, who worry that the pounding their stone and mud walls have taken over the last two weeks of heavy rainfall may have made their homes vulnerable too. The residents of the village have called for support from the administration to inspect their houses and provide assistance to carry out repairs if needed.
