Family rescued from lift in Mapusa Sub-Registrar's office after over 2 hours

The family which was trapped in the lift at the Mapusa Sub-Registrar's office.

An advocate couple and their minor son were rescued after they were trapped in the lift of SR building, which houses the Sub-Registrar's office in Morod-Mapusa, for two-and-half hours late Saturday evening.

The incident took place at about 7 pm, as Adv. Sarvesh Kalangutkar and Adv. Minal Kalangutkar were returning along with their son to their office on the second floor of SR Building after a cup of tea.

As they were in the lift, there was a sudden short circuit and the power supply went out. After a few minutes, the power supply was restored, but the lift stopped working and the Kalangutkar family got trapped in the lift.

On receiving news of the incident, a Mapusa fire tender went to the spot and firefighters and other personnel tried to open the lift door with the help of the police.

When their efforts failed, a GSIDC technicians who maintain the lift was summoned to the site. They reached the spot after about two hours. They too were unable to open the lift door.

Finally, they managed to bring the lift down and with the help of the fire brigade, the trapped family was brought out of the lift after two-and-half hours.

According to sources, the lift has been specially constructed by the government through GSIDC for the benefit of people visiting the Sub-Registrar's office. The lift is also being used by people in other offices of the building. This lift has been frequently broken down and people have been stuck in the lift in the past.
