Winds of instability have started blowing at the Congress-ruled Cuncolim Municipal Council with eight ruling councillors tabling a no-confidence motion against Chairperson Laxman Naik on Monday.
The ruling councillors submitted the notice to the office of THE Director of Municipal Administration on Monday morning.
The eight signatories have sought the removal of Laxman from the post of Chairperson for not taking them into confidence.
The signatories include Landry Mascarenhas, Xavier Anthony Vaz, Jamira Pires, Raimund D’Souza, Rekha Rodrigues, Gouri Shetkar, John Dias and Uddesh Bhiku Desai.
Sources in the Congress group aligned to Leader of Opposition & Cuncolim MLA Yuri Alemao informed that Laxman Naik was supposed to preside over the office of Chairperson for two years as per the understanding amongst the group.
When contacted, the CMC Chairperson told The Goan that he is not perturbed over the no motion tabled against him. “I am a follower of truth and the truth will prevail,” he said.
Though the stakes are loaded heavily against the Chairperson with as many as eight out of the 14 councillors signing the motion, Laxman said he would not put in his papers but will face the motion.
Sources in the know pointed out that the father-son duo of Joaquim and Yuri Alemao had called on the CMC Chairperson at his residence a couple of days ago, apparently to convince him to put in his papers to pave way for the smooth transfer of power.
Sources, however, said Laxman is believed to have expressed his reservations over the choice of his successor, complaining to the duo that his likely successor had interfered in his ward.
