Agitated residents of Dovondem-Fatorda returned back to the Margao Municipal Council on Tuesday to find out the status of their demand for the removal of the GI sheet fencing at the controversial housing project site, only to realise that the Civic body has initiated the process for issuing construction license for the project.

The residents confronted the Margao Municipal Chief Officer Madhu Narvekar on the Civic body’s delay in removing the fencing. The Chief Officer told the delegation of residents that the MMC has obtained the legal opinion from the High Court lawyer in respect of the fencing.

The residents later told the media that the Civic body is processing the builder’s file for issuance of construction license when they have been demanding the removal of the GI sheet fencing over the last six months.

Former bureaucrat Alexio Da Costa wondered how come the MMC is processing the construction file of the builder when the local MLA Vijai Sardesai has written to the Town and Country Planning Minister Vishwajit Rane to notify the property in question as NDZ under section 39A of the TCP Act. “This is a million dollar question which needs an immediate answer when the MLA has written to the TCP Minister to declare the plot as NDZ, the MMC is processing the construction file”, he said.

The local residents also attacked the Fatorda MLA saying that Sardesai has failed to support the people opposing the project. “The MLA says that he is with the people, but has not done anything more to stop the project. He has tried to pass the buck on the BJP State president Damu Naik and the TCP Minister Vishwajit Rane. If he cannot get the project scrapped, the MLA should resign”, they demanded.
