Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai and the Fatorda police came face to face over the use of loudspeaker near the Ravindra Bhavan during a protest against the Hathras rape case on Tuesday evening.
When the Fatorda MLA was addressing the protestors at the candlelight vigil, Fatorda Police station in-charge, PI Kapil Nayak, requested Sardesai not to use the loudspeaker since there’s no permission issued for its use.
A visibly upset Fatorda MLA told PI Kapil to arrest him instead.“It is a shame that the police are trying to stop me from addressing the protestors at a vigil held to condemn a rape case. Goans should know both Uttar Pradesh and Goa are being ruled by the BJP,” he said.
Earlier, Sardesai said that around 87 rapes are taking place in a day in Uttar Pradesh, which is a state represented by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and future Prime Minister Adityanath Yogi. “The BJP talks of Ram temple and Ram Raj, which means UP should represent a welfare state where women and the backward sections get justice. We want a Ram temple, but we should also build a society where people from all strata of society feel secure,” he said.
Saying that things are going from bad to worse even in Goa under the BJP rule, Sardesai urged the people to remain united and raise the voices against injustice.
“In times of the pandemic, the government has sold Mhadei. They have issued prohibitory orders to restrain people’s movement. Time has come to take to the streets,” he added.
Margao Municipal Council Chairperson Pooja Naik, former Chairperson Babita Angle Prabhudesai were amongst those who participated in the vigil.
