Fatorda upstages Margao for projects

Town and Country Planning Minister Vijai Sardesai had his way in the commercial capital, with the Margao municipality giving its green signal for a host of projects, including traffic signals, a skating ring and facilitation centre for Fatorda constituency. But surprisingly, neighbouring Margao has been rnleft out.

TCP Minister’s constituency gets MMC’s approval for three initiatives

In fact, the Sardesai-controlled Margao municipality accorded the go-ahead signal to the TCP’s Minister’s projects which came up before the statutory Standing Committee headed by chairperson Babita Angle Prabhudesai
on Thursday.
The three projects approved by the Standing Panel includes traffic signals at the four traffic junctions in the commercial capital, all located in Fatorda. The traffic signals will be installed at the Bolshe junction, Colva circle, Arlem circle and the Nehru stadium junction, all falling in Sardesai’s
constituency.
Sources in the know revealed that the TCP Minister has reportedly roped in a private party, which is willing to install the traffic signals on an experimental basis without any cost to the civic body.
What’s, however, interesting to know that the Standing Panel headed by chairperson Babita has cleared a proposal for a facilitation centre in Fatorda. The centre is expected to help the citizens of Fatorda with civic amenities, including day-to-day
administrative matters.
Chairperson Babita said the civic body will also talk to the NIC and seek its inputs how to go about the project. “We will ask the NIC what kind of set up the civic body will require to run the facilitation centre,” she said.
Questions, however, remains unanswered as to how the Standing Panel cleared a facilitation centre for Fatorda, though chairperson Babita was quick to point out that the civic body will not hesitate to open such centres in other areas if it succeeds
in Fatorda.
Another project the committee has cleared in Fatorda was a skating ring for children. It is learnt that before the proposal came before the MMC Standing panel, the TCP Minister had prepared the ground work by seeking NOC from a plot owner to set up a skating ring at Amrutnagar in the ward represented by the municipal
chairperson.
When The Goan contacted the TCP Minister for his comments on the civic body’s decision to approve projects in Fatorda constituency, Sardesai said the traffic signals will be extended to other parts of the commercial capital if they prove to be successful
in Fatorda.
“There’s a private party which has evinced interest in installing the signals. I have had discussions with them. If the signals prove successful in Fatorda, the same can be later extended to Margao as well,” Sardesai added.
Indeed, it’s a sheer coincidence that since he became a Minister in the Manohar Parrikar-led Cabinet, Sardesai has mooted projects mostly concentrated in his Fatorda constituency, be it the bio-remediation of the Sonsodo waste, wholesale fish market, walking track at the SAG ground
, Fatorda et al, with no minor or major projects proposed in neighbouring Margao represented by six-time MLA
Digambar Kamat.
